Syslog Processing
(pro's & con's)

SQL Database vs Text File Logging

Problem: Traditionally most IT professionals setup their security appliances to save syslog data to a text file on the local network computer then later import these large text files into a syslog reader to create reports. This traditional method is an extra step that wastes time.

Solution: SyslogIT® replaces the traditional text file method and inserts the syslog data directly into an SQL database. The data is now immediately available to search, sort, report and print.

Viewing Current Data

Problem: Again, most IT professionals are extremely limited using the traditional text file syslog. It must be imported into a syslog reader before any syslog data can be viewed.

Solution: SyslogIT® displays syslog data in a "Live" monitoring console, all in Real-Time. Data is easily filtered, searched, sorted, reported and printed.

Viewing Existing Syslog files

Problem: You have syslog files from another syslog server and need to import them for searching and reporting.
Solution: SyslogIT® 'Log Importer' will quickly import your existing syslog files (logs) created by another syslog server product.

Reading Syslog IP Addresses

Problem: Typical syslog data consists of dates, messages, ports and IP addresses which are not easily read. People cannot easily distinguish who the IP represents. Does 64.233.167.99 mean anything to you?

Solution: SyslogIT® serves syslog data, stores, sorts, displays, searches, reports and emails results in human-readable-format NOT just obscure IP's. Does www.google.com mean anything to you?

Port Activity Reporting

Problem: Since traditional syslog importing views data after-the-fact, live port activity watching and alerting is also impossible.

Solution: SyslogIT® watches both normal and abnormal Live Port Activity according to your custom settings. Simply preset the ports you need to watch and let SyslogIT® do the rest.

Network Device State

Problem: Again, traditional syslog importing cannot return Live information concerning the up or down state of network devices.

Solution: SyslogIT® network devices (Hosts) are continually monitored for both active and inactive state via easily viewable and colorful category Pie Charts.
